About MYELA

It began with a simple belief: every child deserves a chance to learn and thrive, no matter their circumstances. What started as small scholarship support has grown into a multi-faceted mission reaching hundreds of children. Today, MYELA’s work includes scholarship programs, medical missions that provide vitamins and essential care, and campaigns that defend the rights and dignity of children.

MYELA’s mission rests on three pillars: Scholarships, Medical Missions, and Children’s Rights Campaigns. Through scholarships, we give as many children as possible the chance to stay in school and pursue their dreams. Our medical missions bring healthcare, vitamins, and essential support to underserved communities whenever we can. And through children’s rights campaigns, we advocate for protection and empowerment of the most vulnerable. While we cannot reach everyone, each donation expands our impact—helping more children and families in Virac, Catanduanes build healthier, safer, and brighter futures.

Originally from the island of Catanduanes in the Philippines, Maria Whipple is founder of MYELA. Her roots and dedication to her community inspire the vision and mission of the organization. Maria also has 3 children that are heavily involved with MYELA. Eva, the youngest, is an annual sponsor.

“Sponsoring a child each year through MYELA has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Knowing that my support helps cover school, transportation, and daily needs reminds me how even small acts of giving can create lasting change.”
